Ubuntu’s default vim package is
vim-tiny, I recently found this out when I was showing someone how to use vim tutorial on his Ubuntu machine. When he ran
$ vim tutor the tutorial did not show up as expected. To add the full version of vim to his Ubuntu 16.04 machine, I took the following steps.
- Uninstall vim-tiny
$ sudo apt remove vim-tiny
- Run the update command
$ sudo apt update
- Install the full version of Vim.
$ sudo apt install vim
- If you’re just getting started with Vim you can try the tutorial that comes with this full version installing by running the line below.
$ vim tutor
- To get out of vim run the line below.
